Over the last five years we have seen a tremendous growth in our business. Fueled by the lack of housing in our city, our construction firm has been busier than ever. I think that I might have even hired more staff in the last five years than I have in my forty years in business. Despite all of our successes, there have been some significant challenges. Perhaps one of the worst was outfitting our fleet of trucks.
When you run a business that has any number of vehicles, there are always challenges. Not only do you need to keep up on their maintenance, but you need to ensure that there are enough vehicles for everyone that needs to use them. Quite often there will be a few lemons in the bunch that spend more time in the shop than on the road, and you need to have alternate vehicles just in case there are not enough to go around. In a nutshell, it can be a big headache.
Since we have been having a few good years in a row, I thought that it would be the perfect opportunity to replace most of our fleet vehicles and upgrade to some newer ones. I also wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to put a prorack on each of our trucks to save myself some money from broken rear windows. I think that they will be a really smart investment for our business.
I am hoping that it will only take a few months to replace the entire fleet, but we will have to see. In a perfect world they would be all delivered on time, but I know enough that it probably won’t work out that way in real life. At least in the meantime, we can use our existing trucks as we need them – we shouldn’t have a vehicle shortage for a change.
